Men's Basketball

The University of New Haven men's basketball program began in 1961. Since then the program has won more than 700 games and appeared in eight national postseason tournaments. The Chargers have also advanced to more than 20 conference championship tournaments since 1983.

Possibly the most well known men's basketball player is Gary Liberatore (1962-66) who finished his career with 3,176 points. Liberatore still leads all of New England in scoring and holds the top three single-season scoring records at UNH. Liberatore, whose No. 45 is enshrined in the rafters of Charger Gymnasium, joins five other Chargers to be named All-Americans since the program began in '61.

New Haven tallied 29 wins and a .935 winning percentage in during its 1965-66 campaign, setting the record for wins in a season and winning percentage that has held up ever since. In 2002-03, the Chargers went 21-9 under Jay Young. The team advanced to their fourth NCAA tournament and defeated Southern New Hampshire in the opening round.
